Perth
January 2014
Our next cycle tour, planned for May-June 2014, promises to be an interesting change from our past adventures as we will be travelling with our friends Beth & Denis. As enthusiastic followers of our last tour they are both keen to expand on their touring experiences in Western Australia and discover a little more of Switzerland and France in the process.
After some preliminary discussions a tentative plan has been formulated. Plan A sees us start in Wetzikon, Switzerland (not far from Marianne's sister's home) from where we will take a train to Oberwald, high in the Alps near the source of the Rhône river. Our bikes and some luggage will be awaiting us as we will send them ahead, using the very convenient service offered by the Swiss Railways (SBB).
Our route is a long loop, across France following the Loire to near its mouth before deviating north through parts of Normandy. We then swing east traversing the Champagne region before reaching Lorraine and the Rhine River. Travelling upstream we re-enter Switzerland and make our way back to our starting point.
The approximate distance is 2,600km although from experience we expect that we will actually travel around 2,800km before we are finished. As always, we will decide our route day-by-day.
